The First Day Celebration is scheduled for Thursday, September 1 on the Amherst Town Common from 5:30-7pm. Families, teachers and community leaders will gather in a unified show of support for the Amherst-Pelham Regional Public Schools.

Superintendent of Schools, Maria Geryk, invites all families to attend this event. “The First Day Celebration is a wonderful community tradition. It celebrates the people and programs which make our schools so great. The sole purpose of this event is to foster community spirit and demonstrate enthusiasm for and commitment to the education of our students.”

Kimberly Stender, Volunteer Coordinator, states “All families are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner from a local eatery and enjoy pony rides, musical performances, police and fire demonstrations and more!  The Amherst Lions Club will conduct free vision screenings for adults and children. College students, athletes and mascots will greet guests and organize games and crafts.  All activities are free of charge.”

Free parking and shuttle bus service is available at Amherst Regional High School beginning at 5:15pm.  In the event of rain, the First Day Celebration will take place at Amherst Regional High School.

“This year many groups in the Human Services Network will be on hand to educate the public about health and safety programs.” Stender adds, “We are partnering with the Amherst Survival Center in a concentrated effort to support their “Foundation Initiative: Underwear & Dignity for All”.  The ACS is in need of 10,000 pair of NEW underwear for men, women and children. Please consider donating these items to the ASC. Volunteers will collect these items at the event.”
